Shanivar Vrat Katha – Saturday Fast Story, Puja Vidhi & Benefits

Saturday (Shanivar) Vrat Katha — Shani Dev

॥ Shri Shanaishchara Devaya Namah ॥

Shani Dev is regarded as the god of justice and the giver of the fruits of one’s actions (karma). In religious tradition, Saturday is considered especially significant for the worship of Shani Dev. Alongside the Saturday fast, it is customary to listen to or recite the story of Shani Dev. Many traditions are associated with the Saturday fast, but the most widely told is the story of King Vikramaditya and Shani Dev — describing the hardships that came into the king’s life, his patience, and finally, Shani Dev’s grace.

Shanivar Vrat Katha

Long ago, a dispute arose among the nine planets (Navagrahas) over who among them was the greatest and most powerful. Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu — each believed their own importance to be supreme. As the dispute grew, all the deities went to Devraj Indra and asked him to settle the matter.

Indra himself hesitated to make such a judgment. He said that on Earth, King Vikramaditya of Ujjain was known for his fairness and wisdom, and that the planets should go to his court and let him decide.

The Nine Planets in King Vikramaditya’s Court

All nine planets arrived at King Vikramaditya’s court and placed their question before him. The king found himself in a great dilemma — if he declared any one planet supreme, the others might take offence.

Wisely, the king devised a plan. He had nine thrones made from nine different metals and arranged them in a sequence — a golden throne at the very front, and an iron throne at the very back. He asked each planet to take their seat, declaring that whichever throne stood at the front would be considered the greatest. Each planet took its place. Shani Dev’s throne was placed last, at the very back.

Shani Dev took this as a personal insult. He felt the king had deliberately given him the lowest position. Shani Dev told the king that he did not truly understand his power, and that he would soon have to face the consequences of this decision.

The Effect of Shani Dev

Some time later, Shani Dev began to test King Vikramaditya. One day, disguised as a horse trader, Shani Dev arrived in the king’s kingdom with exceptionally beautiful and spirited horses. King Vikramaditya saw the horses and wished to ride one of them. The moment he mounted the horse, it carried him far away into a forest and vanished, leaving him alone.

Wandering through the forest, the king reached another city where no one recognised him. Circumstances forced him to hide his royal identity and live as an ordinary man.

The King Accused of Theft

One day, King Vikramaditya arrived at a merchant’s house and rested there for a while. The merchant possessed a precious necklace. After the king left, the necklace went missing, and suspicion fell upon him. He was seized as a thief and brought before the ruler of that city.

King Vikramaditya protested his innocence, but under Shani Dev’s influence, circumstances continued to turn against him. He was given a harsh punishment — his hands and feet were cut off. The same glorious king who had once ruled a vast kingdom was now forced to live in the most desperate of circumstances.

Life at the Oil-Presser’s House

The king did not lose hope. An oil-presser (teli) took him in, giving him shelter and work. He began turning the oil mill, driven by bullocks, at the oil-presser’s house. This was an extremely difficult period in King Vikramaditya’s life, yet he never abandoned his patience. Accepting his circumstances, he continued to remember God through it all.

Shani Dev’s Grace

Time passed. One day, during the monsoon season, the King Vikramaditya sat at the oil mill and began singing in a sweet, melodious voice. His song reached all the way to the royal palace. The city’s princess heard the melodious voice and expressed her wish to marry the man singing it. As circumstances would have it, King Vikramaditya was married to the princess.

That night, Shani Dev appeared to King Vikramaditya in a dream. The king bowed to Shani Dev and begged forgiveness for his offence, acknowledging that he had made a mistake in judging the planets’ greatness. Pleased by the king’s humility and heartfelt prayer, Shani Dev told him that his period of hardship had now come to an end and that his trial was complete. By Shani Dev’s grace, the king’s severed hands and feet were fully restored.

The king then prayed to Shani Dev: “O Shani Dev! Just as I endured such great suffering, may no other devotee ever have to bear such hardship. Have mercy upon me, and remove the sorrows of your devotees.” Shani Dev blessed the king and said that whoever listens to or recites his story with devotion and remembers him faithfully shall always receive his grace. Shani Dev then disappeared.

Shani Dev’s Glory in Ujjain

The next morning, the princess discovered that the man who had had no hands or feet was now completely healthy. King Vikramaditya revealed his true identity and recounted the entire story of what had happened to him. When the ruler of that city learned of this, he too was amazed. King Vikramaditya explained that all of this had happened by the grace of Shani Dev.

Some time later, King Vikramaditya set out for Ujjain with his wife. When word reached the people of Ujjain that their king was returning, the entire city rejoiced. He received a grand welcome, and the city celebrated with great festivity. King Vikramaditya, having learned from his own experience, understood that no deity, however great or small they may seem, should ever be disrespected. He had the glory of Shani Dev spread throughout his kingdom and arranged for his worship and story to be told widely. The king acknowledged that Shani Dev grants results according to one’s karma, and that every person must remain ever mindful of their actions.

Devotees who remember Shani Dev with faith and devotion, and who recite or listen to this story on the occasion of the Saturday fast, develop patience, self-restraint, and awareness of their actions. May devotees, by Shani Dev’s grace, gain the strength to face life’s hardships, and may they always walk the path of truth, righteousness, and good deeds — this is the auspicious spirit of this story.

Glory to Shri Shani Dev! Glory to Shri Shanaishchara Dev! Glory to Maharaj Shani Dev!
Thus concludes the complete Shani Dev Vrat Katha.
