Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha – Story in English

Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha (Story)

The Santoshi Mata fast (vrat) is observed on Fridays and is regarded as a vow for contentment, happiness, and the fulfilment of wishes. Below is the complete story, the method of worship, and the rules of the fast.

Long ago, in a certain town, an old woman lived with her seven sons. Six of them earned a living, while the seventh did not work. The old woman would feed the six sons well and give the leftovers to the seventh. The seventh son’s wife bore all of this quietly.

One day, when the seventh son learned of this, he grew sad and left home to earn a living in a distant land. As he departed, his wife asked for a keepsake, but he had nothing to give — so he pressed his hand into the cow-dung lying in the courtyard and marked her hand with it.

After her husband left, the daughter-in-law was treated even more harshly at home. One day she went to a temple where women were observing the Santoshi Mata fast. She asked about the method and resolved to observe the Friday fast herself. She offered a prasad of jaggery and roasted gram, and on the day of the fast she did not eat anything sour.

By the grace of the Mother, her husband prospered in the distant land and soon returned home, and happiness and prosperity filled the household. Later, when she performed the concluding ritual (udyapan) of the fast, some jealous people fed the children sour food, briefly disturbing the vow and bringing a little misfortune. But the daughter-in-law performed the udyapan again with full devotion, and Santoshi Mata was pleased. Since then, the Friday fast of Santoshi Mata is observed with devotion for happiness, contentment, and the fulfilment of one’s wishes.
